Minutes
After a long time (April 2001) there seems to be some momentum in the Linux User Group in the city with the announcement of a meet by Sailendra. The venue is at their office in C.B.M. Compound.
The agenda for the meet was “Basic Linux Commands and Networking Concepts”. The meet started with Sailendra giving list of basic commands to very new users. He also mentioned some basic points on the Linux Architecture. At the starting there were very few people but the number started to increase towards the end. Then it was my turn to interrupt for a quick tutorial on Vi editor (Spelt as vee-iee). This was meant to be a quick overview and I promised on a more detailed one in the next meet.
Shortly after, Ravindra (new addition to our group) started to tell us about DNS (Domain Name Service). He told us the very necessity of the DNS .He pointed out clearly how an address like www.something.com might be translated by different server for our packet actually hit the “something” server and we get back the requested data packets. Starting from the root servers which would hold the resource table, he ended on how the translated addresses hold onto our system cache as long as we are browsing with different browsers and how these features were programmed into the core of the TCP/IP stack.
Then Mr.Govind (new addition to our group) an M.C.A student told us about his project in his final year. The abstract seems to be in this manner “A file system for the Linux operating system(called “SFs”= steganographic file system) which in someway could handle two sets of table(tables as in file allocation tables hopefully) one would be the system required and the other specific to the user. In lay man’s terms every user will have a working space area confined to him only or if required a user could put a file to a space on the physical hard disk confined to him and him only making the area/file invisible to other users which also included the standard ownership rights and encryption technologies”.
I hope that is what he was trying to say. He wanted some kind of help from us regarding Kernel Compilation and modules. It was then decided later that the next meet or meets be held quiet often as long as there were only a dozen people.
